Friday Update

Emails received from parents and community members

Thanks to the many parents, relatives, and community members that send emails and notes to teachers, staff, and administration.  We have a community that is very grateful for the schools, sporting events, and educational opportunities that change students’ lives every day.  Our team receives many notes, letters, and emails that express appreciation and good ideas.  From time to time our team may also receive emails or mail that may be accusatory, inflammatory, and mean-spirited.

If someone has a concern, please follow the established protocol, make an appointment with the teacher or administrator to discuss concerns; our team wants to hear and learn about ideas and suggestions as to how we can improve our service to students and the community.  If that does not meet one’s expectation, then the District has a complaint form available on line and in person in the District Office that will be reviewed and acted upon, if completed. There is always the option of attending a meeting of the Mt. Adams School District  Board of Directors; the members are willing to listen and recommend appropriate action.

If there is a need to send an email or a letter, please follow these guidelines: 1) Always sign or provide the name of the person sending the correspondence; 2) Please provide the topic which you are addressing at the beginning of the correspondence; 3) Provide what you perceive as the concerning event, what you suggest could be different, and how we can better meet the needs of the students and community; and 4) Please be polite and refrain from vulgar, accusatory, slanderous, or mean-spirited comments.

Students ask for Good Sportsmanship at the upcoming White Swan vs. Mabton Basketball Game.  Mrs. Tenney and Mr. Florian, principal of Mabton high school, released a joint letter concerning sportsmanship. On January 21st, the sportsmanship letter with the expectations will be read by a team members of both Mabton and White Swan.  The game will proceed as scheduled and we look forward to a positive and enjoyable match with good sportsmanship from students and fans!

AG Credit Northwest Partnership with White Swan High School Ag Program - White Swan High School had visitors from AG Credit Northwest. Marshall Patton from the Pasco office visited our school. AG Credit Northwest will be giving the White Swan FFA Program a grant to be used for pig feed. Our guests toured the barn and talked with students. They were very impressed with our students and the program. They will be at the board meeting next week to present a check to the district.

Ms. Yunuenn Garcia, MSW, has joined our staff. Yunuenn is a school based mental health counselor who will be located on the White Swan campus four days per week and at the Harrah campus one day per week. Having a mental health counselor available on campus to meet with our students on a consistent and daily basis will help us meet the needs of our students.

Principal Widener reports that the iReady benchmark assessment is underway this week. “We have seen some students who have made great growth and are working their way to meeting their typical growth goals,” reports Mrs. Widener. The staff will be looking at this data in order to determine which students need extra support for either intervention or acceleration. We are so proud of our students!

The English Learners Supports - The English learners at the Harrah campus received special attention from Dr. Joanie Monroy this week.  We are so glad that Dr. Monroy is able to come to the campus and see first-hand what great things we are doing for all students. Dr. Monroy reported to Principal Widener that our climate and culture at Harrah is amazing.  This translates in meaning that both students and staff are happy and excited to be learning and teaching at Harrah Elementary and Mt. Adams Middle School. The Harrah staff has embraced the work with Social Emotional Learning and positive behavior supports and their hard work supporting students and staff alike. Thank you Dr. Monroy for your support and being part of our team!

Sacred Road Ministries Partners with the Harrah Campus - Mrs. Widener met with Joshua Tsavatew, from Sacred Roads Ministries, and discussed ways that we can partner for the support of students. The meeting was a great opportunity for Mrs. Widener to learn about the wonderful things Sacred Roads does to support our community. Another meeting is scheduled for next month to continue the discussion and plan for some volunteer activities to better support our students.
