Friday Update

A message from Athletic Director Mueller: Due to some of the concerns in the White Swan Community in recent weeks, the District has decided to move all of the home games for the next two weeks to the visiting campuses.  In that way athletes will be able to continue to compete without interruption.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding.  Below is the athletic schedule for the next two weeks.  If you have questions, please feel free to call the High School Office.

Mr. McCracken provides report on the hiring process for new teachers for the Harrah Campus - Hiring Update: We are close to filling all of our open positions. This year, more than most, Mr. McCracken states, “We have had a great pool to choose from.” The Mt. Adams School District may not be ranked in US News as “A Great Place to Work” but word gets out, and this year’s candidates and those already employed by MASD could go to any number of other Districts, but they are excited to come to Harrah and White Swan in order to provide high levels of learning every day and to influence the lives and minds of our students.  Welcome new teachers and staff to Mt. Adams School District!

It may sound strange to plan “backwards,” yet this is a common practice in Education.  This summer, teachers at Harrah will participate in Backwards Planning.  This is a process that will be implemented by Mrs. Widener who will start with, “the end in mind.”  They start with what the essential learning is for the student in a particular standard, and then plan all of the activities that will lead up to learning the concept.  Mrs. Widener is gearing up to meet with teams of teachers and “backwards plan” curriculum for the 22/23 school year.

Comprehensive Counseling Plan: Mrs. Sheppard and Mr. Hernandez are leading the counseling teams on both campuses in a district-wide comprehensive counseling plan. The MASD counseling crew is leading the work in ESD 105 and setting the standard for excellence related to counseling supports for all Mt. Adams Students!

Professional Development to learn about the Yakama Ways.  Today, over 50 of our teachers, administrators, and other staff are spending the day learning about the lives, times, and experiences of the peoples who call the land in which we live and work, home.  Yes, the Mt. Adams School District is located on the Sacred lands of the Yakama People and comprises almost 146,000 acres and over 200 square miles.  The learning began for our staff this morning in the Middle School Gym with stories from Dr. Anthony Craig about his great grandmother and grandparents.  Dr. Craig is the director of Leadership for Learning at the University of Washington. The teachers loaded up on a bus to travel to Fort Simcoe to learn, see, and feel the location of the boarding school that many of “Our ancestors remember.”  One of the outcomes for the day is for the Mt. Adams staff to feel with our Yakama brothers, sisters, and families whom we serve and to develop an appreciation and better understand their lives and feelings related to our own work as professional educators.

Cinco de Mayo was a huge success this year.  The team of staff that it takes to run an event such as this is incredible.  In addition to all of the planning, there was a change in venue due to inclement weather and another event that had already been scheduled in the new Harrah Campus.  Our team went with the flow and their amazing work paid off at the former campus cafeteria.  Thanks to all those who planned, participated, provided activities, and attended.  ¡Enhorabuena por el trabajo bien hecho!

Below are some pictures from the event…
