Friday Update from Dr. Guaglianone

First Day of Snow – The week ended by ushering in the first day of snow.  It appears that upper valley was hit the hardest, with no lower valley schools having delays or cancellations.  We hope everyone is safe and warm.

The Law of Conservation of Mass - In 8th-grade Science, learners showcased their understanding of the law of conservation of mass by defining and showing it in chemical equations. The law implies that mass can neither be created nor destroyed, although it may be rearranged in space, or the entities associated with it may be changed in form.  Kudos to our students for attempting such high-level thinking!

Growth Mindsets at Mt. Adams Middle School - Just down the hallway from our 8th grade scientists, 7th-grade students discussed the love of learning and how to accomplish great things.  The students explored how having a fixed mindset stifles their personal and academic growth and achievements as compared to having a growth mindset that has been shown to help embrace failure as a learning opportunity, feel more comfortable receiving feedback, feel more positive about oneself, improve self-esteem, and attract better colleagues and friends.

Sixth Grade Hoopsters improve their skills -  In P.E. this week, 6th-grade students practiced their dribbling skills and layups.  Basketball is a big deal in our community, so students wanted to improve their moves as they maneuvered through cones before shooting baskets.

Roses are red, violets are blue, my dog is my favorite, but you’re OK too - On Tuesday morning, 5th-graders deeply analyzed and interpreted poetry.   I hope they were able to make and receive important meaning from words, rhyme, rhythm, and meter to evoke feeling, setting and story their lives.

Meeting the needs of Every Student - The Harrah Campus Inclusion team provided a very interactive professional development activity on Wednesday providing teachers with the opportunity to take strategies back to their teams, determine a strategy to focus on and a plan for reporting on their success at our next session. Congratulations to our inclusion team for providing such a great learning opportunity and being such excellent instructional leaders.

The Class of 2029 is in the House! - Gear Up Director Noemi Barbosa and soon to be Mt. Adams School Board Chair, Mrs. Lacey Simon passed out Gear-Up Certificates to our 7th grade students this week.  This group of almost eighty students was inducted by University of Washington into the Gear Up Program that provides funding for post-secondary education opportunities.  These students will participate in multiple college field trips, college counseling, and special learning events to help them prepare for college and careers in their future.
