Friday Update

Who Let the Dogs In?On Wednesday the law enforcement club had a visitor and a demonstration from Deputy Clayton and his K9 partner (Anita). The students participated in an informative demonstration from the pair that was impressive and captivating.  Anita showed off her skills as Deputy Clayton explained the process that they go through to find drugs. The students loved getting to know Deputy Clayton and learning about Anita. They were all smiles and laughs. Thank you to Deputy Clayton and Anita for their dedication and commitment to the community by coming out to our school on their day off.

Rocket Man Dr. VanDoren -On Saturday, our rocket club led by Dr. Greg VanDoren, launched rockets.  Attending were a group of current and former students along with several community members who were up early on a Saturday morning to participate in the launch. Some of the students attending were able to serve as escorts for the visitors and earned community service hours as part of their graduation requirements. Launching the rockets was not the only learning the students participated in. Loni Gibson explained bear and coyote feeding habits.

Dr.VanDoren reports that the new wireless launch system worked flawlessly and the club can’t wait to use it again.

Juniors on Track! Mrs. Sheppard and Mrs. Tenney track students each quarter to make sure they are on track for graduation. The Junior class is making progress. Students that are green in the chart below are completely on track for graduation and as long as they continue and pass their classes they will graduate on time. Students that are yellow are slightly off track and will be provided with a credit completion lab to catch up to where they should be at this time in their high school career. Students that are red are in danger of not graduating on time. Mrs. Sheppard works with these students to design a schedule to help them make progress. This adjusted schedule might include working on credit retrieval during our Wednesday schedule.   Principal Tenney reports that White Swan High School ended their first quarter on October 23rd and had some great news from the Credit Completion Lab. “We have helped students complete (retrieve) 24 courses -- 12 credits total.”  Congratulations to Mrs. Tenney and these students.

Continuous Learning - On the Harrah Campus, the members of the district leadership team discussed the definition of success criteria and how they can provide teachers with support to ensure that not only teachers know what success looks like but more importantly that students know what success looks like for them as individual learners.  They have begun implementing these new strategies for student success.

Gang Prevention -The Harrah Campus held their first Gang Prevention information night on Tuesday. Those in attendance received a lot of good and useful information that will help teachers, staff, and parents work with all students. We hope to have even more parents at the next session to learn how to help their students resist gang membership.

Trunk or Treat

Today, Harrah staff will be hosting a Trunk or Treat from 5 pm to 7 pm.  Students and the community  are encouraged to wear their costumes to this event.

They have several community members participating as well. It will be fun, but a cold night for all.

Celebrating Success! The Harrah Campus held end of the month assemblies this week, where many students were recognized for exhibiting Positive Behavioral Expectations as well as being acknowledged for wonderful attendance.  Congratulations to these students for your excellent achievements!
