Friday Update from Dr. Guaglianone

Exploring New Learning -The exploratory classes are off to an engaging and exciting start at Mount Adams Middle School. In Yearbook, students practice their photography skills and how to use "press badges" with etiquette so they can capture the memories of this school year. In the library, learners apply their critical thinking abilities as they go head-to-head with their peers in Chess class.

Fall Sports at Harrah Campus -The Charger season has started. Mr  Hernandez reports that there are over 50 students in the volleyball program who are being coached by head coach Helen Haggerty and assistant coach Cami Wilson.  The football team had a strong turnout with 31 athletes. Coaches Fernando Simental and Ryan Craig are excited for the new season.

Student Assessments -The Fall assessments are in full swing as well. Principal Widner reports, “DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Learning Skills) are being administered by our amazing educational assistance led by Sarah Hangan. The team is working hard to ensure that our results are clean and dependable. The early signs indicate that our students are showing stronger literacy skills. Ms. Johann came into the office to report that 10 out of her 19 third graders are at grade level. She excitedly exclaimed that is the most "green" she has ever had in her career here at Harrah. Our iReady testing is also underway. The assessments are very important local data pieces for our school improvement plans.

Practice makes Perfect - This week the Harrah Campus conducted a secure and teach drill. Secure and teach drills are conducted to ensure that students remain in their classrooms to clear the hallways while teaching continues. Secure and Teach protocol is called if there is something of concern occurring outside the school building requiring the staff to be vigilant. Secure and Teach can be called for a variety of reasons. The reasons can vary from an unknown person parked on campus to the local law enforcement asking the school to engage in a secure and teach while they conduct any number of enforcement activities.

Principal Widener would like to remind parents that we have a safety protocol in place to ensure student safety while the construction of our new ballfields are underway. We practiced the drill this week and it was very successful.
